A time-travel trip, during which we learn the history of Tinos through its museums and archaeological sites.
The museums and archaeological sites of Tinos will travel you back in time to get to know the history of Tinos. Starting from Chora we visit the archaeological museum of Tinos and admire its collection of local archaeological findings. Then we visit the sanctuary of Poseidon and Amphitrite in Kionia, which in ancient times was an important sanctuary throughout Greece. The sanctuary included a large gallery with about one hundred marble columns, which gave the location the name Kionia (marble columns in Greek).
We continue our tour inland, visiting the Venetian castle of Exomvourgo and, as you walk among the ruins of the castle, you get to learn about its history. Exomvourgo, which is the second-highest mountain of Tinos, hosted the ancient Greek city of Tinos, while in the Middle Ages the Venetian castle was built to protect the island. This unconquerable castle was the strongest one in the Archipelago.
Finally, our route ends at the village of Pyrgos. The largest village of Tinos with a rich marble extraction tradition. Pyrgos is the birthplace of many famous marble craftsmen, such as Giannoulis Halepas.
We will visit the impressive Marble Museum there, and learn the important history of marble in Tinos. We can also visit the house of sculptor Giannoulis Halepas, which has been turned into a museum. After that, we have a break in the famous square of the village with the great, ancient plane tree in its center.
